Looking for a day trip from Beirut? Well, look no further! One of the oldest cities in the world, Byblos is sometimes overshadowed by Beirut but it will certainly give you a run for your money. Only an hour away from the city center, this charming town is a true postcard destination in the heart of Lebanon. Check it out for yourself!

What to do in Byblos?

At the entrance of the city, Byblos looks like your average modern town – but as you venture in you’ll be surprised to see how rich this unique place truly is.

First inhabited somewhere between 8000-7000 BC, now a flourishing ancient city with shops, restaurants and a plethora of history. The Old City of Byblos has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and rightfully so. In fact, it was named one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Here’s what you should expect to do and see in Byblos, Lebanon.

The first “attraction”, if we can say that, is the old Souq or market. Your one stop for all – souvenirs, spices, a bit of shopping, a fossil fish museum and the joy of family owned shops preserving the richness of the town.

Still standing tall is the Byblos Castle or Crusader Castle, built in the 12th century from indigenous limestone and the remains of Roman structures. Inside you’ll find the Byblos site museum, although a snap from the outside is a sight as is. The grounds are much larger than you’d expect so plan accordingly and roam freely.

Like many historic Lebanese cities, Byblos is famous for its Saint John-Marc Cathedral – A cathedral dedicated to Saint John-Mark, who is believed to be the first to support Christianity in the growing city. It’s surrounded by an inviting garden with several olive trees.

Venture down the cobblestone streets to reach the edge of town and start of the Mediterranean. Reach the picturesque Phoenician Harbor, and marvel at the view while strolling down the pier.

As you reach the harbor you’ll be greeted with small boats ready to take you on a tour in the sea. Walk past them to reach the defensive tower, which was added by the Crusaders. In the water you’ll still see the remains of the structure.

Most visitors enjoy a meal with sea views right on the harbor at Bab El Mina. You’ll get to indulge in a delicious assortment of seafood and Mediterranean dishes.

But remember; don’t skip out on the cafes hidden in the cracks of Byblos. Check out the outdoor Eddé Yard or stop for a drink at Old Pub.

Byblos is certainly our favorite day trip from Beirut, in fact its an absolute hidden gem in Lebanon and we highly recommend spending a day in the historic town.
