  History

We’re happy to share with you this whimsical little borough nestled in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. You’ve probably never heard of this place, and until recently neither had we. Jim Thorpe? Doesn’t even sound like a town, right? But we’re becoming experts in finding hidden gems wherever we go.

Surprisingly, at some point in time, the town of Jim Thorpe was the second most visited tourist destination in the US after Niagara Falls. In fact, it was dubbed the Switzerland of America! We aren’t sure why that’s no longer the case. With the charm of a European village and the eclectic history of the Industrial era, Jim Thorpe has got to be on everyone’s bucket list!

Dating back to the 1800s this little town used to be called “Mauch Chunk,” a Leni Lenape Indian name meaning “Bear Mountain.” Later on, in 1953, it was renamed after the Olympian athlete Jim Thorpe. Its fame is really attributed to the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company which laid out the land and then built the first industrial railroad in the US. The booming local coal mining industry that followed allowed for the quick expansion of the town, its economy and tourism.

  Highlights

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Enjoy a scenic ride that travels for 8 miles alongside the Lehigh River Gorge. The railway parallels popular trails and bike paths. The picturesque journey takes around 45 minutes and starts and ends at the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Station. Definitely a must-do on any visit to Jim Thorpe!

Asa Packer Mansion

You can’t miss this Italianate mansion atop the town. Despite being built in 1861, it’s incredibly well-preserved. The beautifully designed villa was owned by the entrepreneur Asa Packer who used his skills to build and repair canal boats later used to transport coal. As a result, he became a local celebrity – a wealthy one of course. The mansion offers amazing guided tours for those looking to learn more about Packer’s influential history and success. Harry Packer Mansion Inn

Another Packer estate – perched atop Packer Hill (no surprise here with the name). You’ll immediately be taken aback by the impressive façade, as we were. This mansion though is not just another tourist attraction, it’s actually been transformed into a lavish bed and breakfast. The real bit of excitement here is that the Inn hosts Murder Mystery Weekends – which is totally up our alley. Check out when the next event will be hosted here.

Mauch Chunk Opera House

Built in 1881, this vintage opera house can seat up to 400 people. Amazingly, they’re still running performances today. You can check out the schedule of their shows here.

The Old Jail

There are quite a handful of fascinating jails to be visited in Pennsylvania, and the Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe is no different. Travel back in time on a tour of the daily life of inmates in the 19th century. With 72 rooms, a dungeon and skin-crawling stories – it’s a sight to see.

Stone Row Houses

The town is decked with Victorian homes, stone-row houses, and elaborate architecture – and that alone warrants a visit. The historic buildings now host an abundance of cafes and boutiques.

Our favorites stops were Muggles’ Mug, a Harry Potter themed coffee joint, and Marion Hose Bar, a restored firehouse now serving an assortment of comfort food!

Now, you might be – wondering what’s going on with all these carriages? Well, your chariot awaits. Get in touch with the awesome folks at Scott Lignore Carriage Rides here to set up a unique ride around Jim Thorpe.

Where to Stay in Jim Thorpe

The quaint town is full of charming bed & breakfasts for visitors looking to spend a night or two, here’s what we recommend: The Inn at Jim Thorpe or The Dolon House. Guests can also enjoy a quiet stay through Airbnb, at this Victorian home in the center of town or this mountain-top escape. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you could also check out this cool glamping site just outside of town.

And that’s a wrap for this scenic little town! Take it from us and visit Jim Thorpe in the fall for the most majestic of colors. They’re also known for the outdoors festivities, so keep an eye out on upcoming events here.

Never heard of this place but it looks like the ultimate autumn destination. We’ll have to head there next year now that we can drive in the US legally finally.
